How to Store Medicines Safely at Home
Correct storage helps medicines remain effective and reduces the risk of accidental poisoning. The best storage location depends on the product, household and instructions on the packaging.
Keep medicines secure
Store medicines where children and pets cannot see or reach them. A high, locked cupboard is safer than a bedside table, handbag or kitchen counter. Keep visitor medicines secure as well.
Avoid heat and moisture
Bathrooms and areas near ovens or windows can become hot or humid. Unless the label says otherwise, choose a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. Products that require refrigeration should be stored according to the supplied temperature instructions.
Use original packaging
Original containers preserve the label, expiry date, batch information and instructions. Avoid mixing different tablets in one container unless a pharmacist has prepared a suitable dose-organiser system.
Review your medicine cupboard
Check expiry dates regularly and separate products that are expired, damaged or no longer needed. Follow local pharmacy guidance for safe disposal rather than flushing medicine or placing unsecured products in household rubbish.
