How to Read Medicine Labels with Confidence
Medicine labels contain important information, but the amount of detail can feel overwhelming. Learning where to look helps you compare products and use them more safely.
Start with the active ingredient
The active ingredient is the substance that produces the medicine’s effect. Different brands may contain the same ingredient, so checking this section can help prevent accidentally taking two products with the same medicine.
Check the strength and dosage form
Strength describes how much active ingredient is contained in each tablet, capsule or measured amount of liquid. The dosage form tells you whether the product is a tablet, capsule, cream, syrup or another format. Never assume two products are equivalent just because the names look similar.
Read the directions and warnings
Look for the recommended dose, maximum daily amount, age restrictions and situations in which the medicine should not be used. Warning labels may include advice about driving, alcohol, pregnancy or other medicines.
Find the expiry date and storage instructions
Do not use a medicine that is expired, damaged or stored incorrectly. Heat, moisture and direct sunlight can affect some products. Ask a pharmacist how to dispose of unwanted or expired medicine responsibly.
